>> Does pollution make you mad? Do you wish you could squash a few governmental and industrial heads to make it stop?
Well, learn techniques from the Toxic Avenger (affectionately known as "Toxie"), a singing, dancing, New Jersey super hero who was dipped into bucket of toxic sludge and emerged a ready to rock and roll AND rip off enough arms (heads, legs, etc.) to get the job of environmental cleanup done, once and for all!
Staging consists of hundred of old oil drums, each oozing crud. Center stage oil drums rotate to reveal scenes, including that of a library, a dump, the greedy mayor's office, and a scientific laboratory, to name a few. Mounds of barrels provide the landscape over which actors and dancers climb, leap, dive, and periodically lose their guts.
While all tickets on the main floor are great, try to obtain Tox Box tickets ($85, two drinks included) which are for mezzanine seats that run along the edge of the balcony. Rest your drinks conveniently on top of old barrels that serve as tables, each of which is filled with some dubious substance. (That's me sitting on one of the barrels. I had hoped to leave the theater 25 pounds lighter due to leached toxicity, but no such luck. I gained. My husband, to my right, was clean shaven, however, when we entered the show...)
The show makes me want to re-attend, dressed in character or with props, similar to what's done for the long-running movie, The Rocky Horror Picture Show. The Toxic Avenger provides several characters that can be imitated, including Toxie himself (think green slime), his questionably virginal, blind love interest, a mad scientist, miscellaneous thugs (with and without extremities), a buxom, power-mad mayor, and a sweet little old lady (with or without extremities). For ideas that match the theme of crap (no pun intended) and corruption, visit the fabulous Halloween Adventure NYC Mega Store at 4th Avenue and 11th Street.
Is this a family show? It is very mildly ribald, so you need to know your comfort level when attending with older teenagers. They'd get it, but maybe you wouldn't.
Every super hero, of course, does need a love interest, and quite fortunately, Toxie's keeps an ample amount of room freshener on hand. Although Toxie is an oozing mess, his smooth pecks, tight abs (smothered in room freshener, of course), and ability to shred anyone who tries to hurt her, convinced his gal that he's "Mr. Right." That, and the fact that he succeeds in cleaning up New Jersey, whereas the U.S. Government's Superfund Sites are still trying.
Background
The Toxic Avenger Musical book and lyrics were written by Joe DiPietro and music and lyrics were written by David Brian (keyboard player and founding member Bon Jovi). Their work is based on the original silly business of Lloyd Kaufman, whose fascination with toxicity lead to The Toxic Avenger movie, animated series, books, and comics.
