Kus Studio - Indonesian Fabrics and Crafts

[ NEW YORK, NY - NYC - 8/5/2001 - www.Littleviews.com ]

Kus Studio Online Tour

January 2006: This wonderful shop no longer exists. If we can find Kus set up elsewhere, we'll let you know. Even though you cannot shop there, please read this article, along with all the additional photos, to find out more about Filipeano crafts and products.

>>  Interior decorators understand the value of hand-crafted fabrics when it comes to transforming a tasteful New York apartment into a warm home. You will, too, once you see the soft, antique Indonesian fabrics collected by Kus, the artist and importer behind Kus Studio.

Kus (whose full name is Kusnadi) is an Indonesian native who traveled extensively through the *islands prior to coming to the United States in 1985. According to Kus, all the Indonesian islands are enchanted, but Bali, in particular, is the most beautiful place in the world.

New York was initially introduced to that beauty in 1985, when Kus and a partner began importing antique Indonesian Batik fabrics. Over time, Kus attracted many friends who share his passion for Indonesian arts, and through them, formed partnerships that work behind the scenes to bring you Kus Studio.

Visiting the Store

The store is small, maybe 700 square feet, but it is filled with treasure. Fabrics, old and new. Statues. Carvings. Musical instruments. Furniture. Banana leaf books. Ceramics. Incense. Jewelry. And even a 14' boat and a giant cow bell!

You see things in Kus Studio not commonly found elsewhere. If Kus is there when you stop by, he'll be happy to tell you about unfamiliar objects. Be sure to ask him to show you what is antique and what is new, so you can make the distinctions yourself! No matter how old, however, all items are produced by highly skilled craftspeople, with Kus supervising the design and construction.

If you have decorating needs or are an interior designer, arrange an appointment. He will work with you to create custom furniture made from a combination of antique and modern materials. He'll also help you find fabrics to match the atmosphere you are trying to create.
